Describe one specific example of your leadership. (The writer of your letter of recommendation re: Leadership  Abilities and Potential must confirm this experience).

One example of my leadership would be in my involvement in the Munster Community Hospital Internship Program this past fall. Participating in this competitive experience being one of only 10 students chosen out of Munster High School, gave me a sense of responsibility as I represented my school and its excellence. As a medical intern, I worked closely with a variety of doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. I was able to see the true reality of a hospital and the types of nurses we need more of. I provided my undivided attention to both the patients and healthcare professionals, following in their footsteps, being present, and conveying my passion each step of the way. As an African American woman, I am aware of the various health disparities that plague our community, and it fuels my compassion for this career path.

Walking in with my scrubs and notebook, nurses would say "Are you a high school intern?" and from that moment, I knew I had to be a leader and create an image of excellence for my school. While working in floors like cardiac rehab, endoscopy, catheterization lab, radiology, nursing unit, therapy, pharmacy, and wound clinic gifted me with knowledge and experience that I will need to be successful and resourceful in my career as a nurse.

Describe a recent particularly satisfying public service activity. (The writer of your letter of recommendation re: Public Service must confirm this).

One recent satisfying public service activity was volunteering for the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Youth Symposium held on March 11, 2023, in Gary, Indiana. The Symposium addressed a number of issues relevant to youth today, such as the importance of self-care and self-esteem, healthy living and wellness, college readiness, and civic responsibility. Engaging the younger students in the Symposium sessions created opportunities for them to learn about ways to not only give back to the community (such as service projects that I have personally participated in such as the Alzheimer's Walk and Parks and Recreation programs) but also motivated them to stay focused on their studies and future dreams. Volunteering in event set-up and as a 12th grade representative, I spoke to the attendees about my experiences in the community and also my aspirations to be a Nurse which made me feel proud of my involvement in public service.

Describe the education program you intend to pursue if you receive the scholarship.

In my pursuit of Nursing, I would like to explore the fascinating world of pediatrics. Obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with a minor in Psychology, will allow me to better my understanding of the child's mind, and ultimately make a difference in the lives of our youth. Furthermore, I thrive to build and expand my skills in efforts to conquer disparities in our community, and promote both health equity and social justice. Focusing on medical and social science curriculums, I plan to use each of these resources to expand both my awareness and appreciation of this passion. Accordingly, I prepare to dive into intensive research on traditional and herbal medicines that can help most to reduce these disparities. I choose to further investigate the causes of these devastating diseases and the best remedies in efforts of health promotion. Specifically, as an undergraduate, I am eager to utilize the large facilities and simulation centers available for effective learning, and to continue my journey of providing both collaborative and compassionate services. Each internship and nursing program track fills me with excitement and confidence in my pursuit.
